So, we went to the orthodontist today. Our dentist had recommended one down the road from her. She said that he's very conservative (meaning that he doesn't put dental appliances on that don't need to be there, not that he's going to vote for McCain/Palin!). I'd have to say that it was one of the most pleasant trips to a dental professional ever.
He introduced himself, and we talked about school. He and his wife just started homeschooling their 7th grader so we had a nice little conversation about that. Then, he gave Kait a math problem to take home with her (haha), and we talked about our education. Turns out that he was a chemical engineer too, but he ended up with a mathematics degree because he'd already been accepted to dental school, and he didn't feel like taking the last few classes (one was thermodynamics - can't say I blame him!) to graduate with a chemE degree.
He said that Kait's tooth just has to move a little bit in order to not be harmful to the other teeth in her mouth. So, he actually suggested - since she's a homeschooler, he feels this is feasible - that she bite on a popsicle stick a few hours a day for a few weeks to see if we can get it to move that small amount needed for the immediate concern to disappear. We tried it tonight with a makeshift item since we don't have any popsicle sticks, and it seems like she's going to have to hold it with one hand. That might be a problem. I thought she could just bite. We'll have to play around with it, I guess.
If this will work and save a lot of time and money, I'm all for it. I can't find any info on the internet though...I have a feeling it won't be working. We'll see!

Seems a weird treatment, but if it works, its definitely worth it. That will save you a bundle. And I have respect for the guy if he's willing to suggest something like that over handing you some appliance or something!
Maybe she will have to hold it for the first few times and as she gets used to it and the tooth moves, she won't have to hold it anymore?
